The day of Thanksgiving is different every year.
It is on the fourth Thursday in November of each year. In fact, Thanksgiving suffers a series of difficulties and finally, Congress sanctioned the fourth Thursday in November as a legal holiday in 1941.
General progress:
- George Washington proclaimed Thanksgiving to be a national holiday on the last Thursday in November.
- Thomas Jefferson later did away with the holiday.
- President Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November a national day of Thanksgiving in 1863.
- President Roosevelt switched Thanksgiving from the final Thursday in November to the next-to-last Thursday in November in 1939.
- Congress sanctioned the fourth Thursday in November as a legal holiday in 1941.
The holiday celebrates the giving of thanks for the autumn harvest in the early days. Nowadays, Thanksgiving celebrates everything you met and received from friends, families, relatives, strangers, nature, the nation, society, and life.
The things you met and received are impossible all good. Usually, we thanks the warm time, however, sometimes the press from a difficult time can push us to go farther. Hence, Thanksgiving has a much broader meaning.
Traditions of Thanksgiving:
Traditional Food for the Thanksgiving Feast
The traditional American Thanksgiving meal includes turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, and pie (popular flavors: pumpkin, pecan, sweet potato, and apple).
Vegetarians can replace the stuffed turkey with a turkey that was made out of tofu.
Break Wishbone:
The wishbone refers to the bone in the turkey’s chest. It looks like a slingshot with two separated sides. When the turkey was carved, the bone was put aside. And after the dishes are finished, all people draw names to decide two participants who get the chance to break the bone. Each of them catches one side of the bone and make a wish, and twist the bone at the same time. The wish of the one who gets a large part of the bone will come true in the coming year. So that’s why the bone was called “Wishbone”. That’s a good expectation for the following year.
Vegetarians may miss breaking wishbone, this funny family activity. But there are some interesting movies that are recommended to watch with loved ones.
Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade
In 1924, the employees of Macy marched through New York City, dressed as clowns, cowboys, and knights with floats, live bands, and even live animals. And this parade became an annual event since then. As times changed, the Macy’s Parade includes more interesting things like songs and performances from Broadway musicals and giant helium-filled balloons. People can watch this great parade on TV or travel to New York to be part of the tradition.
